Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) is a world renowned centre of clinical excellence and one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK. We became a Foundation Trust on 1 October 2015 and believe that this will enable us to work more effectively in partnership with our patients and our local community to provide high quality healthcare. Oxford Eye Hospital in based in the new West Wing of the John Radcliffe hospital. Each year we perform surgery on approximately 6000 patients, treat 13,000 eye emergencies and hold over 100,000 outpatient appointments.

This new post offers an exciting and unique opportunity for a pharmacy assistant to have a predominantly non dispensary based role. The post holder will have a patient facing role in Oxford Eye hospital, working alongside the ophthalmology pharmacy technician, dispensing pre labelled TTO pack medication directly to outpatients in the eye hospital and counselling them on appropriate use of topical treatments such as eye drops. Training will be provided to allow the post holder to become confident when offering advice on compliance aids and eye drop administration to improve adherence and compliance. In addition the post holder will have a crucial role in high cost drug management within Oxford Eye hospital, and help maximise existing and new cost savings initiatives. This is a new post so your feedback will be welcomed to shape the role, and develop the service going forward.

You will respond to enquiries and requests from staff, patients and carers and ensure appropriate and accurate information is readily available and to escalate questions and problems to other members of the pharmacy team when needed. You will be expected to form good working relationships with staff from all the different groups within the eye hospital and work together as part of a team.

You should have experience of working as a qualified Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant, of using computer systems for dispensing and stock control and have good communication, be well organised and able to use your own initiative.

This post would suit somebody with either a hospital pharmacy background, or with community pharmacy experience wishing to make a change into the hospital environment, for which appropriate training will be provided. You must have successfully achieved the relevant units of pharmacy services skills NVQ level 2 (QCF) or an equivalent GPhC accredited training programme.
